I hear this phrase frequently. It seems to be a catch-all for unanswerable questions that come up in therapeutic settings. It’s also a cop-out used casually by people who don’t want to deal with the issue at hand. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been told, “just let it go!” Wouldn’t it be amazing if it were that easy?
There are days when I get very overwhelmed with the past and I never know when I will get struck by an old experience that throws me for a loop. It gets tiresome, to say the least…But, the difference now is that those overwhelming feelings don’t last for long. I’ve gained tools and understanding that get me through these types of onslaughts of past feelings in a matter of hours, sometimes minutes.
I’m only just, after going through Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for a year, able to look back and realize the anxiety I lived with on a daily basis throughout my life and thus, how anxiety ruled my life.
