I know. You’ll start journaling “one of these days”. You’re not alone. Why is the thought of journaling something that so easily brings on procrastination? At least for me, I am aware that the biggest reason is because I fear someone reading my private thoughts. One of the attributes of my PTSS is that I want everything in my life to be super private. So, journaling brings on something resembling an invasive feeling. No doubt, that comes from never feeling safe in my home as a child where there were few healthy boundaries.
However, there are other reasons you might not want to journal. For instance, perhaps you think journaling is for the little girls, tweens, and teens, not for older people! If that’s the case, then, perhaps it’s time to break out of your comfort zone and try something new. Remember, trying new things helps your brain stay in shape. Plus, it’s been a long time since journaling was only for the young. So, if you’re new to it, please know that you are in great company. The fact is, many people use journaling for reducing stress and anxiety.
Journaling is a Beautiful Thing!
In putting your fears aside and taking a chance, journaling becomes a beautiful and gratifying way to clear and organize your mind. In fact, do you know that checking items off a list causes your body to produce endorphins? It’s little tools like this that serve to make a positive difference in your days. Moreover, when journaling about feelings and thoughts around current events, it also serves to relieve a great deal of inner turmoil and therefore stress.
Journaling can reduce stress by helping one get rid of negative thoughts. A study published in a 2011 Psychological Science journal noted that writing down your thoughts and then physically throwing away the paper that you wrote them on can be an effective way of clearing your mind.Michigan State University

Ways to Journal
The real question is, “how many ways are there to journal?” It doesn’t take a lot of effort to sit down and write in spiral binder from the dollar store. It’s also not very inspiring. But, I tell you what, if you’re sitting in a homeless shelter and you need to relieve stress, that plain notebook looks pretty gosh darn good.
Pen & Paper
For years, I was up and down with journaling but interestingly, I saved all my journals for the last 30 years. I like to write with a pen in a paper book of some kind and I find that it helps to have something with a cheerful cover. I was walking through the Dollar Store yesterday and this little journal popped out at me and after looking at it for a few seconds, I knew it was going home with me. I’m laughing because I just told you that journaling isn’t only for the tweens and teens, but maybe I’m still a little girl deep inside. 💞 Regardless, I think somebody did a really nice job of designing this cover.
But, I think the point is to be kind to yourself and find something that cheers or motivates you. Here’s an example of a cheerful, motivating choice. This selection is a Lined Journal with Premium Thick Paper, 8.4″ X 6.25″, College Ruled Spiral Notebook.
Or, maybe you want to celebrate celestial energy. Here’s a reproduction of a gold-tooled book binding created by the Henry T. Wood bindery of London in 1933. The Wood firm was known for its distinctive designs, as evidenced by the subtle symmetry and intricate details of this cover.
We all love Hallmark with its long tradition of delivering feel-good-stuff. This beautiful journal is no exception! Just check out this lovely Hallmark Soft Cover Journal with Lined Pages. I might have to order this one for myself.
Apps & Devices
The world of apps and devices is not new and has had time for some very creative coders to come up with helpful apps for mental heath and stress reduction. But, there are also apps for journaling! So, if relying on devices is your thing, here’s a list you might want to check out. These are compatible with Amazon Fire, but you only need to go to your device’s company store to get apps for your device, i.e., Google Play, the Apple App Store, etc.
Here’s an app that simulates a Diary with a Lock! How cute is that? Doesn’t it just get you in the mood to dip your pen in ink and start writing? Oh wait! It’s electronic, so no ink, no paper, no mess, and no fuss.
For another Personal Secret Diary that’s loads of fun, check this out. This app comes with a bright color scheme and some very cute emojis. It really perks your spirits with its cheerful interactive layouts.
If you are tech savy, this might be the right avenue for you. Of course, there are platforms that seem to do most of the work for you, although you will pay for it. But, never-the-less, some people like to create a website for journaling. Interestingly, even though many don’t use this utility, most websites have “private” settings. You simply keep your journal online and no one sees it unless you give them sign in credentials.
Amazingly, out of 1.5 Billion websites online, 455,000,000 of them are WordPress websites. In fact, this is a WordPress Content Management System (CMS) website. It’s a big subject but just for fun, I’ve included a board from Creative Market below where you can scroll through Journal Themes for Website. There are so many clever people in the world creating themes for WordPress themes, you are sure to find one that you absolutely love.
